Michigan State softball originally were scheduled to open at home on Tuesday, March 25, but winter weather postponed the game against Bowling Green. A make-up date is expected to be scheduled.
Instead, the Spartans will kick off play at Old College Field with Big Ten Conference action this weekend, March 28-30, hosting series against the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Wisconsin Badgers at Old College Field.

Sophomore Franklin Gomez moved one step closer to the ultimate goal, beating No. 8-seed Mack Reiter of Minnesota, 5-3, this morning in the quarterfinals of the 2008 NCAA Championships, held at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. Gomez, the 133-pound No. 1 seed, will face Iowa's Joey Slaton, the No. 4 seed, in tonight's semifinal.

Gomez enters the tourament with a 28-1 overall record and as InterMat's No. 1-ranked grappler in his weight class. Gomez will face Northern Iowa's unseeded Josh Baldridge, who owns an 8-5 mark, in the first round. Both Gomez and Baldrigde received byes through the opening bouts of round one.
