Default Cardio Base in a few weeks

I know this isn't exactly the way to do this, but I'm not exactly in top shape for the season (which started last weekend). I want to get somewhat of a gas tank before the next tournament (in 3 weeks). I wrestle in the 215 weight class (if that makes a difference). What's the best way of doing this (what specific exercises should I be doing)? And should I stay off the weights or should I keep lifting?

So bascially you need more endurance. Easy way to improve this. Wrestling is an anerobic sport not aerobic. So basically we need to improve your anerobic endurance. Best way to do this is by running sprints. Sprints are the best way to improve anerobic endurance and your ability to perform in wrestling. There are different types of sprints: hill sprints, weighted sled sprints, flat sprints, etc. All work your anerobic system. Many people overlook sprints and replace them with running. So instead of people doing hard all out sprints, they are jogging 30-60 minutes a day for almost everyday. Not trying to burst anyones bubble here but running doesn't really help wrestling that much as sprints do. Why? Because wrestling is a anerobic sport and not aerobic. Aerobic means "with oxygen" while anerobic literally means "without oxygen". Aerobic events lasts for long periods of time that require not as much oxygen as anerobic does. Examples of aerobic events are marathons, 5k and 10k races, and biking. Anerobic events lasts for short periods of time like wrestling does and require tremendous amounts of fuel. You are going all out for over 6 minutes while still needing to require oxygen. So sprints are the way to go. I will write more about this subject but I don't have time now. A good example of sprint workout: 8-10 sets of all out 30 second sprints with 2minutes of rest between each set. This is a great workout. If you feel 30 seconds is too cruel then lower it to 20 seconds and no further than that. You should do this 5-7 times a week.

Greco, do you think a 6 minute high intensity run would be good anaerobic endurance training for wrestling? Because if you think about it a wrestling match would be around the same intensity and time.

i say to this, though a wrestling match is 6 minutes of straight work, that the effort does have its peaks and rest points. Ie handfighting is probably less streneous than scrambling after someone gets in on a leg. Sprinting both better simulates this in my opinion, and gets your max threshold higher, even if only for a short time.

I think 6 minutes hard run will do very good things for your cardio, but its not nesse carily anaerobic exercise, its too long.

No, just stick to the sprints.

    All good stuff

Just make sure you scale it so that you have enough energy for the tournament

Thanks for your help guys. I'll do sprints and HIIT cardio on the bike, and I'll incorporate dumbbell swings and snatches into my workout (I don't have kettlebells).

That won't really help your cardio in a wrestling match.
