The waste of space there is the lack of a post.
If you look to the left, your avatar, post count, name, and location come down almost as far as the ad itself. Some people, with taller avatars, will actually create more white space than the ad itself.
Who pissed in your cheerios RYou? This is a great site that they are constantly trying to tweak and improve to make it better. They are very responsive to our dislikes and frequently take care of things that we don't want around. You could probably not come off like a complete jerk and still get the same thing accomplished.
"There it's better"
Does anyone really care about a freakin facebook "Like" button placed in an obtrusive location that serves to disrupt the flow of information?
I could see moving the like button up on the same row as the title of the post to conserve space but its really not on the top of the to do list as we prepare for the season.
The ads will always be changing.. just like they have for the past 3-4 years.
If you can't mentally block out the Like button I don't know what to tell you. The ads on this site are deliberately static so people who visit a lot eventually ignore them. The same should go for the like button.

Says heaps about the purpose and need doesn't it.
Thanks for making my point, all of the them.
Every community board uses ads for funding. It's a matter of position. On the better sites they are subtle and do not intrude on the mission of the board. Here, the ads have become the mission, not the support.
