Why not move to Sweden? Overtime is illegal. Work is capped at 40 hours per week. You get 6 weeks vacation annually and a 6 month sabatical with pay, every 5 years. It's a medical social system so there are no medical bills. You'l go for that won't you? The intent there is to employ as many individuals as possible and OT eliminates the needs for additional warm bodies.

The downside? You'll give about 60% of your paycheck to taxes and most purchase private medical insurance too so they don't have to wait in line for medical care.

Taxes are an illusion. Cost of goods and services is a better measure. Americans often give 60% of their paycheck for housing.

    Spoken like a true communist!

At least you're honest about being lazy.

Unless you're a renter, you'll get every dime you ever put into housing back and then some. It remains the best investment over the long haul.

Why lazy? Say I have a goal in the gym to reach a certain weight I can do or to read a certain number of books in a year or get ready for something else where I have to do a lot of work with no pay, often for longer than a year. Often these goals require more days off from work to be rested. Why am I automatically lazy?

    RYou,

Most people today can't afford to buy a place unless they are married and both people have good jobs or at least one person makes a salary in 6 figures.

Even if you have a mortgage and the house is yours, you can't really sell it since you need a place to live.

Then you have to pay for bridges, tolls, gas, car, insurance whereas in Sweden public services might be much better and/or cheaper.

Seriously Big, you need to get out of NYC, it is twisting your world view.

Big, the real reason you can't only work 3 days per week and still have all those other benefits is because... drumroll please... you can't have everything you want. I know it's a shock, but we live in a world of limited resources and we have to chose to have/do some things at the expense of others.

If you only want to work 3 days per week, you can do that, you just have to give up other things in order to do it (medical coverage and your own house). If you want those other things, you'll have to sacrifice some of your free time and spend it at work instead.

And you could only work 3 days per week and still afford medical and houseing, you'd just have to switch career paths. Firefighters only work 1 out of every 3 days (though they work 24 hour shifts) and a lot of nurses work 3 days per week (12+ hour shifts).
There's no such thing as a pretty good aligator wrestler.
