Thread: Wrestling endowments

Oregon St has, I believe, the oldest endowment. Dale Thomas started it long ago and I think its in the $5 mil range. Maybe more. I believe all scholarships and travel expenses are endowed. OSU's endowment is set up so that they only use a % of the interest so it is always gaining every year.

Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

That's how all endowments, wrestling or not, are set up. A lot of endowments have taken a hit in the past year with the stock market having taken a dive.

But, by the way, don't think that endowments are a 100% guarantee to keep a program. Wasn't Notre Dame's program endowed?

I believe in Notre Dame's case, it was somewhat endowed and the AD at the time talked the widow of the man who was in charge of it, into just giving the money to school and the program was cut.

    Something like that anyways.

That's pretty close. The good fathers took advantage of a benefactor's widow.

No guarantee of not getting cut. But when decisions are made the self-sustaining program has a better chance of survival. Didn't help Marquette either. They were fully self-sustaining.

When I hit a big Powerball and can then fully endow Maryland's program I'll make d#&m sure that, if wrestling is dropped, they also lose the money.

Iowa endows at least parts of 7 scholarships. Most of that is the work of Bob Bowlsby so you have to think that Stanford will move in that direction.

Folks - I don't really know the point of this thread - but if we worked our butts off (Isn't that a wrestling trait?) couldn't we endow far more wrestling programs?

I think ODH was just curious about endowments, nothing more.

And yeah, Terp, I think that the ND benefactor trusted the school a bit more than is done today. No large donations are made without well-written contracts these days.
