In England, there is a professional soccer team in the minor leagues that is owned by soccer fans. Fans pay $70 a year to become part owners, through the website below. In return, they get to watch all of the team's games online, as well as vote on the board of directors and some of the team's financial decisions. As of now, they have around 30,000 paying members from 70 countries, and the team is doing well in its league.
A variant of this idea could be a viable option for funding some of our international wrestlers. For a small monthly fee, a group of donors could sponsor an Olympic hopeful through a website. In return, they would receive regular updates from the athlete in the form of blog and video posts. The more donors, the more athletes that could be sponsored. Donors would vote through a website to decide who to sponsor, and so on.
It might be worth thinking about.
