Why would Varner get it over Pucillo? Congrats to Metcalf, altho I don't think him as godly as most, he deserves it.
P.S. Anyone else see the year that Hodge was on SI

I was just throwing Varner's name up there for comparison--sensitive to the frequent criticism of his style--showing that his record, including his pins, are commensurate with all the Hodge candidates. However, I wasn't suggesting he should get the award.
Wow. Honestly, I didn't think they would give it to him because of the not undefeated thing...people must be going apesh!t over on themat.com.
Jacob Schlottke---Gone too soon, and the world is a little less bright because of it. RIP, brother.
One, two, Evans is coming for you...
Brent Metcalf was also named Academic All-Big Ten.
Along with 5 other Hawkeyes.
Dan LeClere, Matt Fields, Jay Borschel, Matt Ballweg and TH Leet.
RIP Jacob Schlottke 1984-2011
I think it was hard to argue with Metcalf. He was the champion at the most challenging weight. I have posted it before but the Hodge is essentially wrestling's MVP and those awards are at least part high school popularity contest. He was one of the highest profile athletes this year and I think going in to Nationals he would have had to screw up big time to lose it. His body of work this season certainly makes a strong case.
I am thinking that if Metcalf is wrestling VaTech instead of Iowa and he has the same season, he does not get the Hodge.
How many of the voters for this trophy are based out of Iowa. Being that close to him all season has to influence their votes. I am not saying that he doesn't deserve it, but he did not meet the previously stated #1 criteria.
