LAS VEGAS - Former Cowboy wrestlers Jordan Oliver and Clayton Foster grabbed second-place finishes at 66 kg and 84 kg, respectively, in the 2013 ASICS U.S. Open held in the Las Vegas Convention Center on Friday.
As the No. 4 seed, Oliver began his run at the title, defeating Dylan Alton in three periods, 0-1, 3-0, 2-0. Next up, Oliver had a NCAA championship rematch, taking on Jason Chamberlain. Oliver was the victor once again, winning 2-0, 5-2, and cruising to the semifinals where he faced top-seeded Brent Metcalf. The bout was tightly contested and went into three periods, but Oliver eventually took the 1-0, 0-1, 1-0 victory, winning in the clinch. Waiting for him in the finals was two-time NCAA champion Kellen Russell, who handed Oliver his first loss of the day, 0-1, 2-2, 1-0, taking home the 66 kg title.
Former Cowboy and current Wyoming club coach Clayton Foster ran through his bracket at 84 kilos, knocking off the No. 3 and No. 7 seeds. In his first matchup, Foster defeated Kevin Radford handily, 6-4, 5-0. Foster slid by No. 3 Phillip Keddy in the quarterfinals, picking up a 0-3, 2-0, 6-0 win. He stayed hot, defeating Ed Ruth in just two periods, 3-0, 4-1, taking him to the finals, where he faced top-seeded Keith Gavin. Foster kept the match close but eventually fell, 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, producing a runner-up finish.
At 96 kg, Cayle Byers earned a spot in tomorrow's championship tournament. He started the tournament in pure dominance winning his first period against Luis Rivera with technical superiority and finishing him off with a pin in the second. He moved on to face Derron Winn, who squeaked by Byers, 0-1, 3-0, 1-0. Byers went to the back side of the bracket only needing one more win to seal his spot in the championship tourney, and did just that, defeating Ryan Malo, 1-0, 4-1.
The tournament concludes tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Ten wrestlers will represent the Cowboys in the senior and junior freestyle brackets. The junior finals will begin at 7 p.m. CT and the senior finals will take place at 9 p.m. Fans can keep up with the tournament on trackwrestling.com or watch it live on flowrestling.org.Oklahoma State results
