Three Broncos Seeded at NCAA Championships
INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA released the Division I NCAA Wrestling Championships brackets, Wednesday, allowing the five Boise State qualifiers to see their first-round matchups.
All-American Jason Chamberlain, who enters the tournament as a No. 2 seed at 149 pounds, will face Caleb Ervin of Illinois in the first round. Ervin, a redshirt freshman, finished the season with a 22-12 record and went 2-3 at the Big Ten Championships, finishing sixth.
Jake Swartz will be the No. 10 seed at 184 pounds, taking on redshirt sophomore James Cook of Campbell in the first round. Cook has only wrestled in 14 bouts this season, tallying an 8-6 record. Cook entered his conference tournament as the No. 7 seed but used two decisions and a pin to automatically qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Heavyweight J.T. Felix is the No. 11 seed and will see Justin Grant of Bloomsburg to start things off. Grant, a redshirt junior, finished the season with a 24-4 record and finished second at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships.
George Ivanov (157) will face redshirt junior Daniel Zilverberg of Minnesota in his first-round matchup. In the dual against the Golden Gophers earlier this season, Ivanov took on Brad Dolezal, winning by a 10-3 decision. Zilverberg took fifth at the Big Ten Championships.
Rounding out the Bronco lineup is Brian Owen who will wrestle Lehigh's Randy Cruz to open the tournament. Cruz is a freshman finished the season 31-10, qualifying automatically after winning the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association.
The tournament will be held March 21-23 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
