Again I'm showing my stripes as a traditionalist. I know that there is debate as to whether a tech fall should be worth more points than a pin because it shows more dominance, but the ultimate goal of wrestling is to pin your opponent. Every scoring maneuver is geared towards getting you closer to a pin. I believe that when we wrestle to accumulate points and not for a pin, we are perverting the basic philosophy of the sport. I believe that take-em-down-and-let-em-up should be stalling because it is not working for a pin. When this style was becoming popular, it was justified by saying that some wrestlers can put their opponent on his back easier from their feet than from the mat, so by letting him up they are setting up a pin; but how many wrestlers let their opponent up and then go for a throw or other move straight to the back? But I digress. A pin should be the ultimate victory and nothing should be worth more (except maybe DQ by flagrant misconduct).

Im pretty sure if you were a true traditionalist, we'd all still be losing 40 lbs in two days in a sauna. That being said, I see your point(s). But again, in a sport that is losing the battle of viewership and dollars, sometimes change is inevitable.

I did that. Some changes do improve the sport and make it safer, but I hate to see wrestling change significantly just for the sake of attracting new fans. I don't believe that it will ever die; there will always be high school and college programs and people like us following them (okay, rstrong, I'll try to get my head out of the sand one day soon).

My first freestyle match (1974) I was ahead 7-1 when the guy threw a half and I rolled through it and the ref called a fall. Freestyle is to keep kids interested in the sport .I never cut a pound for FREE yet lived in plastics during wrestling season.

Did a cheap pin resulting from your own move keep you interested?

Interested in no longer rolling through a half.

Re. rule changes, any thoughts on either 1) awarding a point for a push-out in folkstyle, or 2) a stall call for a push-out. Not in favor, generally, of adopting even a hint of freestyle rules, but too many guys run to the edge as soon as the whistle is blown.

I would hate to see the freestyle push-out rule be adopted in folkstyle. But, I agree that there is too much playing close to the edge of the mat. I think refs should be quicker to give stalling calls when wrestlers continue to back up and play the edge of the mat.
