On an afternoon when so much wrestling history was being made in the NJSIAA Individual Championships, Anthony Ashnault (No.1 @ 112) was unable to put his own accomplishment in perspective.
The South Plainfield High School sophomore became the storied program?s first two-time state champion, defeating Watchung Hills freshman Mike Magaldo for the fourth time this season with a 7-1 decision in the 112-pound final before a near-capacity crowd of 10,288 at Boardwalk Hall.
?It?s an honor to be in an elite class by myself in the two-time category for South Plainfield,? said Ashnault, who improved his scholastic record to 86-0. ?I don?t know if it really kicked in as much as it will but I?m sure I will look back at this and say it will probably be one of my best accomplishments.?
Many are already tabbing Ashnault as the heir apparent to 215-pound senior Andrew Campolattano (No.1 @ 215) of Bound Brook, who on Sunday became the second wrestler in New Jersey history to win four state titles (Delbarton?s Mike Grey won four championships from 2003-06).
?I?m not going to say I?m the greatest ever, but I feel like I set the bar for kids like Anthony Ashnault and other great wrestlers in this great arena,? said Campolattano, who ended his brilliant career as the state?s winningest wrestler (175-1) with pin No. 117 over Cherokee?s Michael Zeuli in the final.
Ashnault still has a chance to become New Jersey?s first undefeated four-time state champion (Grey, like Campolattano, also had one loss).
South Plainfield teammate Troy Heilmann (119) and Tevin Shaw (171) of Piscataway both lost in the finals, the latter suffering a history-making defeat to two-time state champion Ethan Orr (No.15 @ 171) of High Point.
