Default 2008 Deglane Freestyle: General Remarks

In the men's freestyle wrestlers at this Deglane, the USA had one 66KG, two 74KG, and three 84kg. Since a country can only score team points with its highest place winner in each weight, having only 3 weights able to score put the team at a big disadvantage, and part of the reason they only finished 5th.

The Canadians (1st place) had all 7 weights, the Indians (2nd) had 6 weights, the Russians (3rd) had 5 weights, the Great Britains (4th) had 5 weights, and the French national team (6th) had only 4 weights.

The freestyle women only wrestled 4 weights, and the USA had 3 wrestlers, each in a different weight. The USA placed 2nd behind Roumania, which had 7 total wrestlers, and wrestlers in each weight.

The French freestyle women, who were 3rd, also had 7 wrestlers, and wrestlers in each weight.

    Thanks!

But why had France only 4 weights in their own country?

    Don't have any official answer.

There were many other French wrestlers competing at Deglane representing their particular French club. The French national team is listed separately from them in the team standings.

Perhaps because this was so soon after the olympics and the major French wrestlers were training with other tournaments in mind for their yearly cycle.
