Three Hoosiers Eyeing Titles at Southern Scuffle
Dec. 29, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three Hoosiers remain in contention for individual titles at the 2010 Southern Scuffle. The trio of Ricky Alcala, Matt Powless and Paul Young advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket and are now each three wins away from bringing titles back to Bloomington. As a team, Indiana is slotted 18th out of 33 teams heading into day two.
Alcala, the nation's 20th-ranked heavyweight, opened his day with a 5-3 decision over Edinboro's Ernest James before pinning 10th-seeded Odie Delany of the Citadel in 6:13 to reach the quarters. His next opponent will be No. 7-ranked and second-seeded Ben Apland (Michigan).
Powless and Young took similar paths to the quarterfinals; winning three matches, two by way of major decision. Powless bookended a 7-2 decision in the second round with 17-6 and 11-3 majors while Young started with back-to-back majors before topping Roger Pena of Oregon State, 7-5, in round number three.
Kurt Kinser and Ryan LeBlanc also come back for action on Thursday, vying for third place showings through the wrestlebacks. Kinser came up just shy of joining the three Hoosier quarterfinalists, dropping his third round bout, 2-1, due to riding time. He rebounded quickly, however, cruising to an 8-2 decision in his first consolation match.
LeBlanc, meanwhile, was even closer to becoming a quarterfinalist. The Morrisville, N.Y., native battled fifth-seeded Kyle Blevins (Appalachian State) to a third tiebreaker before falling, 3-1. He, too, responded though with a decision to begin a wrestleback run. LeBlanc's next adversary presents a big challenge as The Citadel's Turtogtokh Luvsandorj was the 165-pound fourth-seed, but was upset in the third round and will face LeBlanc to start things off on Thursday.
Wrestling is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with the championship finals scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
