What if the restaurant sign said I think only whites should eat here.

If you want to quote just a portion, hit "QUOTE" at the bottom of the post just as you would normally do, then go into the quoted part of your post and just delete the part you want to get rid of - highlight it and delete it. But be careful you don't delete any part of the [QUOT] at the beginning or the [/QUOT] at the end, especially the brackets.

If you want to quote part of it and reply, then quote another part and reply to that, copy the [QUOT - Person's name - etc] and place it at the beginning of the part you want to reply to (unless you're at the beginning and it's already there), then type [/QUOT] where you want to stop the quote and place your reply.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.

I misspelled quote so that the post wouldn't use the "quote" format.

No one should enter such an establishment.

But seriously, bad taste and stupidity are legal, but denying service is not, nor should it be.

I agree that no one should enter that place of business but you would agree that the person has the right to say it, and that person would also have the right to serve non-white customers poorly because it is his decision to run his business that way.

It was said earlier owners have the right to refuse service to anyone. As long as their motives are not racist.

I would like to know more about the legalities of "refusing service" in a post Civil Rights Act-age. The story that makes me wonder is when Cincinnati-based restaurant owner (and former NJ HS wrestler) Jeff Ruby claims to have kicked out O J Simpson and friends from his restaurant in Louisville during the Kentucky Derby last year. From what I remember, there was no "scene"; Simpson & Co left quietly, and there were no threats of boycotts or lawsuits. (Ruby's restaurants are all high-dollar places which count big-time athletes and hangers-on as customers.) I don't know the legal issues, or how this didn't become a legal or political issue, but, to my memory, it didn't. Maybe it is the notorious nature of Mr Simpson.

As for Simon Roberts -- he was hardly notorious. Now, one could possibly imagine a Stillwater cafe owner refusing service to ANY Iowa Hawkeye because they're mat rivals... but the rest of the team was served water, except for the one who happened to be African-American. To know Roberts as I do, I can't imagine anyone refusing to serve him if they were to know the man. So it would seem the restaurant made a prejudicial, bigoted decision based on skin color and nothing more. And to my mind, that can't be justified in any way.

You didn't put [/QUOTE] at the end (a$$hole).
