Default Anti-Immigrant Sentiment

Here are a couple of items to get people to think a little about the inflammatory rhetoric that we use today to depict immigrants. (I personally don't differentiate between legal and "illegal," as ideologically, our country has always opposed immigration; doesn't matter who the group is and how they got here).

Anyway, if you think that these stories are mere coincidence and have no relation to the nonsense that we hear daily about "illegals," think again.

In reference to the second story and how it mentions the sharp rise in anti-hispanic bias crimes, anyone care to find it a coincidence that there are now more than 200 additional hate groups in the U.S., with most of them concerned with "illegals?" In addition, most of them have sprung up in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and California.

Ban,

There is a difference between Illegal and Legal immigrants. One group broke the law to get here and the other followed the proper procedures.

Here in Phoenix, AZ it is a very big issue. The last two police officers killed were killed by illegals. Our insurence is very high because of the amount illegals without insurence. I have personally had two hit and runs by illegals on my car.

It is funny that when anti-illegal propositions come up to vote in the elections they are passed usually by about 70% (even in the districs that are mostly Hispanic).

Now I am not against Legal immigration and I believe we need to tweek the system and allow more people in legally and that we need to streamline the process.

I am very much against illegal immigration.

People are starting to get fed up with Illegals in this country and fed up with Washington doing nothing about it!!

I know you will not agree but just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.

Chance, if you made all of those immigrants "legal" they'd be able to buy insurance so everyone else's rates would go down, it's less likely that they would have run off after hitting your car (where the hit and runner's cault?), and it's possible that the incident with the police wouldn't have happened (I don't know details so I don't know if it was due to them being illegal).

Seems to me that less strick immigration laws would help solve pretty much all of the problems that people associate with "illegal immigrants".

"if you made all of those immigrants "legal" "

They tried that in the 80's and it didn't work.

Why should we reward illegal behavior?

Because most of the problems caused by the illegal behavior are due to it being illegal, if you make it legal the problems go away.

It did work in the 80's. I work in the Hispanic community in Chicago, and the people who received amnesty are productive citizens. The amnesty in the 80's was 20 years ago and has little to do with immigrants today. Chance, it's easy for us to be in the US and call them criminals, but they are often forced to come to this country because they have no other way to feed their family that is in some tiny village in Michoacan, or in a tenement in Warsaw.

This point, however, is getting away from ban's original point in this thread. Anti-illegal sentiment, and trust me, around here, it doesn't matter how they got here, they are all seen as illegals, is at a really bad place in Chicago. I constantly hear of my Mexican and Polish friends being treated terribly on the street, in the grocery stores, etc. At my church of all places, I had to have a strong talking to with a woman I've known for years when she went on and on about how "they should all go back to their own country." The "they" she was speaking of were born in Chicago.

And out of curiosity, Chance, do you ask immigrants that you meet if they are legal, and then treat them according to their answer? This thread was not about how the government treats them, it's about how WE treat them.

I have spoken with a lot of immegrants who are Legal. They are more upset about illegals than I am. I know there are a lot of immigrants throughout the country, but there are a lot of illegal immigrants here in the southwest. If someone is here Illegally then I have absolutely no respect for them since they obviously have no respect for the country that I love. They BREAK THE LAW to get here then demand equal rights, demand that I speak their language or where they shop that people speak their language. No that is not how it works!!!

When they were marching down here in Phoenix they had to be told not to carry the mexican flag but carry the American Flag!! That should tell you something.

"It did work in the 80's"

If it worked so well in the 80's then why do we have this problem now? If we are going to continue to allow people to break our laws and then give them what they want, why have an immigration policy to being with?

"Chance, it's easy for us to be in the US and call them criminals, but they are often forced to come to this country because they have no other way to feed their family that is in some tiny village in Michoacan, or in a tenement in Warsaw. "

Blue- they are Criminals by the definition of the word. They broke a law right?

How were they forced to come to this country. If they are having tough times then THEIR government needs to do something. Why should i have to pay for them?

There is a reason that people in the southwest (including Texas) are passing laws against ILLEGALS. It is because the people are sick of it!

Chicago has the second largest population of illegal immigrants in the country. Most are from Mexico and Poland. The southwest doesn't hold a monopoly on illegal immigrant issues.

It's sad for me to see a stance that lacks any compassion. Yes, it is their government's fault that times are so tough, but how does that help a man with a family that needs food? Immigrating here legally takes a lot of money. That man with the starving family can't really come up with the cash needed.

We need to have immigration reform but not by rewarding those who BROKE the law. We should not reward Illegal behavior. If they are unable to do what they need to do in their own country then they need to work within their own country to make it work.

I should not have to pay for everything they need. I should not have to learn spanish in order to accomidate them.

-If we "legalized" them you wouldn't have to pay for everything they need. And what exactly do they need that you have to pay for?

-Why do you have to learn spanish, is this a new law where you live? If it is it a good idea, I think our country would be better off if everyone learned a second language.
