Its called C-Span and I started often watching it and it has all these "behind the scenes" meetings on issues like Iraq, Supreme Court ruling, relations between America and Russia and other interesting events.
They show it uncut with some opinions and arguments that you will never see in mainstream media.
One Russian delegation totally assailed Mr. Lantos of Foreign relations committee one night on issues like Kosovo. Last night they had law professors from top schools discuss whether the Supreme Court's new Justices are straight ideologues. Great stuff! Very informative!
One night awhile ago they had Karl Rove basically explaining how USA should take over the World.
Big, I don't watch it all the time, but I agree it can be very informative. And even though politicians are often posturing, as you say, it's a refreshingly unfiltered, unspun medium and you're exposed to a variety of different views. It's like being in the capitol, without actually having to go there. I like C-Span 2, too.
On the other hand Big gets a lesson on how poltics really works in this country. It is very interesting. When I first started watching in the 80's I'd say, "there is no way the parties can disagree so completely". It is a sport. A game. With consequences to be sure. These are a bunch of power hungry egotists, and oddly they are also public servents. It is an odd combination.
FWIW..... back in the day I used to be up late a lot. I'd put on c-span hoping to get to sleep. There was Newt Gingrich talking constantly to an empty house.... but he was still on air. Say what you will about the guy.... but he is VERY smart.... and his capacity to work and chase his goals is (was) nothing short of astonishing.
