Global military spending 1.2 trillion in 2006 What the article doesn't explicitly say is, the U.S. accounts for almost half this total (529 billion), or 44%, while Britain and France, for example, are at 4-5%.
Draw your own conclusions.

Re: Global military spending 1.2 trillion in 2006 The article said that China and India are the worlds largest armes importer. I would say that America has a lot of ever head and developement cost in these numbers that other countries dont have. Plus lets factor in the pay scale that our soldiers get paid compared to other countries. Not including housing and food plus the cost of running a war.

Re: Global military spending 1.2 trillion in 2006 I was just pointing out why the number is so high and I see what you mean.

Re: Global military spending 1.2 trillion in 2006 Yes, the reasons you give for the costs are a reasonable explanation.

Re: Global military spending 1.2 trillion in 2006 But what sort of story do you suppose these figures tell the rest of the world (assuming we value their opinion)?

Re: Global military spending 1.2 trillion in 2006 I think it tells them that we value the security of our nation and that we have the ability to provide support for our allies.

And European countries don't value their security?
