It is also why I tell anyone who asks that using firearms for personal protection requires more than just buying a gun. I think anyone who keeps firearms without training and frequent practice is asking for disaster - and is lucky when it doesn't strike. For example, in the original article I posted I said that I faulted the lady for firing a "warning" shot. For one thing, it indicates to me she had not had training, since no firearms instructor I have ever heard recommends that action, and all of them strongly oppose it.
There is a lot involved in using firearms for protection - understanding self-defense and the use of deadly force, seeking protective cover and verifying clear backdrops, being able to effectively use the weapon, and, most important, having the will to use the weapon. Much, much, more.
When I originally heard the 911 recording of this case, I figured this guy was toast. There is no way he could justify self defense. He was safely in his house. To stay safe all he had to do was lock the door. Instead he put himself into the danger position, then shot the two burglers in the back while they were presenting no threat to him. All this was done after he had been warned by the dispatcher to stay out of it. It seems to me he received the benefit of the doubt from a very lenient jury.

I thought this artcile included the statement by Horn, more likely it was in another that I read where he was quoted that if he had the chance to change the event, he would not go outside and wouldn't have pulled the trigger. He's quite remorseful over the event.

I have a friend who is an arms dealer and he has a Vulcan in his basement -got it off a chopper they used in 'Nam-imagine being a peasant farmer in Viet Nam and having a helicopter drop out of the sky and blow away 1/2 your village in less than a minute . You think anyone believed his story or was he treated like a lunatic reporting UFO'S ?

In fact, he wasnt even indicted by the Grand Jury. And everyone knows how easy it is to get a Grand Jury indictment (As the legal sying goes "A Grand Jury could indict a ham sandwich).

People do, sometimes, but not guns.
We lived for many years in a very isolated, rural setting. Police response would frequently be measured in hours, not minutes. There were a few times when an ARMED response guaranteed the safety of my family and my property. But that is a rural setting - not the same as in the city where police are more responsive. A few years ago I heard my wife screaming outside. I went to the door to see two dogs, a pit bull and a chow, trying to climb up onto her car where they had her "treed" on the roof. I yelled at them from the open door which resulted in the pit making a run at me. I suppose I could have called the police - but I got my handgun (yes, kept loaded and accessible) and went back out. I shot the pit bull off of the front hood of the car. The chow ran. The owners were upset at me (threatened to sue) and I spent a LOT of time with the police explaining why I had fired a pistol in city limits. (Side story, these are the same owners who, about a year ago, had their two pit bulls escape from the yard and attack a lady in my driveway - the police shot those dogs. To the best of my knowledge, this is the THIRD dog attack from this same family, and they have never had to deal with any legal consequences.)
As for your preferring to be shot rather than carry a weapon, I suspect you are speaking from the viewpoint of one who has never been shot. I will protect me and mine - and should the situation warrant, you also.
