Yes, there's a defnite connection between violent crime and apartheid. During apartheid, the white government used brutal force to segregate poor black people into distinct aeas (townships). These townships were, not suprisingly, hotbeds of violence. After apartheid ended, the poor were allowed to live whereever they wished- which was great and moral and necessary, but it also spread out the crime. At to this the frustration of poor persons who remained poor even after apartheid, a healthy dose of white-on-black and black-on-white hate crimes, anda completely incompetent police force which is underpaid and overbribed, and you have one of the most violent societies on earth.

I would say that compared to some other African nations (ie Zimbabwe) South Africa was able to assimilate fairly well. Race relations are improving and the country is stil fully functional. They've got to deal with their crime and HIV problems though.

[quote=M Richardson;75256]Why own a personal weapon? From the Ventura County Star:

Bar owner foils burglary suspect
From staff reports
Sunday, June 29, 2008

A co-owner of the Halfway Cafe Station, a bar in the Ozena Valley area of northern Ventura County near Lockwood Valley, was at home when she was alerted to possible criminal activity at the bar.

She arrived at 6 a.m. Friday armed with a handgun to find Greg Dunlap, 52, of Maricopa leaving with two cases of beer, a bottle of alcohol and a carton of cigarettes, according to a statement from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

After the woman fired a warning shot, Dunlap complied with her directives, according to the statement.

Here's the alternative story...
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...s/5864151.html

The grand jury heard two weeks of testimony from witnesses, including Horn. They likely also heard his breathless 911 call, during which the increasingly frustrated retiree ignored a dispatcher's pleas to stay inside and out of harm's way. The Nov. 14 call ended with the sound of Horn racking a shell into his 12-gauge shotgun's chamber followed by three gunshots that killed Colombians Diego Ortiz, 30, and Hernando Riascos Torres, 38.

Does that give you some kind of breathless thrill that two burglers were gunned down?

They were suspected burglers when they were shot. And I'm 99% sure they weren't convicted of robbing the place.

Matclone - please note that RYou headed his story with the statement: "Here's the alternative story . . . (emphasis mine). He was posting in response to an article that I had earlier posted in which a citizen used a handgun to protect her property, with no loss of life. I read RYou's post, as an alternative, as meaning that use of firearms as personal defense doesn't always have a "happy" ending. In the case of his article, not only were two lives lost, but the citizen went through the legal problems that go with taking those lives.
In my opinion, your posting sounded like someone trying to pick a fight.
