I had a very influential teacher in high school who actually did something like this for a Master's project, went into prisons and interviewed people who were in for some pretty serious stuff. Just about their childhoods, their crimes, and their general state of mind amongst other things. He then combined what he gleaned from the interviews into a large presentation about the individuals.

Cracking the binder open that he kept the project in for perusal by those interested made for some headspinning reading.

When I was in school, one of our profs had us write to prisoners on death row (it turned out that my guy had already been executed). One of my classmates, however, carried on a correspondence (which he shared) with the guy who was the subject in A Thin Blue Line--a movie I recommend to anyone who is interested in the death penalty, death row prisoners, or sociopaths.

I taught a course called the "Master Student" about 5-6 times (I think it is done exclusively by sociological and psychology teachers now). Basically it is a course that teaches new students them how to become college students. Like a lot of courses of this nature there are various personality, opinion, work habit, background evaluations, and so forth, that elicits a lot of open ended responses. Holy shit, these guys 'really' wanted to talk about stuff. And the stuff they talked about was..... well damn!

I think this was a terrible decision and I find it more cruel and unusual to keep these people alive with the chance to get out and rape again. When are we going to start protecting our kids and send a serious message to rapist. That message needs to be that if you rape or molest a child you die no question. They should limit the number of appeals based on the evidence that supports the case or possibly discredits the case and then kill them if they are guilty. I wish the Supreme Court could grow a pair or at the very least leave the states alone to make their own laws.

Wow. Not what I expected from the Christian Corner. Is that really what you believe? No "turn the other cheek" for you I guess.

Not that I'd like to see them go easy on that guy, but in general I'd like to see our government fry less of its citizens, not more.

Now I actually believe that letting this guy wander around in the general population for as long as 'it' takes, is the best way to handle the situation, I also can't help but notice that those who proclaim themselves as the most ardent followers of the Christian faith seem to be the most vengeful. I dunno but if memory serves that is not the way I was brought up to view Jesus and Christianity.

I have this notion that most of the ideas we encounter as humans today, have been around a long, long time and that some ideas which seem to have been subsumed at some point, really haven't disappeared but are waiting for the right circumstances to appear again. For example, the Puritan views on sex, on punishment, on vengance (I hope I'm not unfairly characterizing Puritans) seems to have had great influence throughout American history and are still present today.

Being a fan of history, and currently reading a book about the religious underpinnings of religion on our society (it is a pretty fair and fascinating view), I entirely agree.

When I saw, for the first time, a theatre production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible a few years ago, it struck me how relevant the story (which he wrote in the late 40s about, I think, 17th century America) is yet today. My companions did not like it so well, thinking it was a story that improperly undermined authority.

This crime is beyond my ability to forgive or turn the other cheek. If you commit an act that destroys the life of a child then I hold that your life should be taken or you should be tortured and then killed. I have no sympathy for these people.

That sounds like your subjective view as a parent, but is it what your church and your religion would say? It doesn't sound like what I remember of the Bible and the teachings of Jesus.
