Related to this are the growing number of fools who are now afraid of vaccinations* and don't want to innoculate--arguably putting not only their children but the public at greater risk.
*probably many of the same people who believe in creationism, who believe global warming is a hoax, and who believe in all manner of conspiracies (9-11, etc. etc.).

My experience has been the opposite. Alot of the people I have met who don't believe in vaccinating their kids are the people who believe in organic food, natural healing, tend to be a the left side of the spectrum and environmetal fanatics.
I know them personally so I have a hard time calling them idiots, but I will settle for misguided.
Without ANY information whatsoever, I am wondering if the law wasn't the result of something similar to this, but going in the opposite direction. Some minor wanted medical attention that was denied by a parent. Legislators then passed a law setting an age when the child can make the decision. I would not be terribly surprised to find that the law was the result of a minor seeking birth control/abortion medical services.

I suppose you are too young to remember Thalidomide. It was a drug given to pregnant women as a sedative. It resulted in thousands of deformed children.

Note my qualifier, "probably". I agree, the "misguided" are not limited to the political right. Actually, I believe the 9-11 conspiracy nuts frequently identify with the left.
I knew a guy in the military (don't know his political persuasion) who was convinced that some shots we were going to get would do him great harm, and he eventually shortened his career because of this.
a case is going to court in Wisconsin right now in which a family prayed for their diabetic daughter instead of taking her to the hospital. Sadly, she died and now the family is being charged with manslaughter I believe, but the way the law is written it is doubtful that they will be convicted of anything.
I've said it umpteen times, but I'll say it again. Science (eg. medicine) on one hand - religion/faith on the other. Don't use faith to deny science, and don't use scientific arguments to try to prove or disprove the existence of God. When you blur these lines you get into deep doo-doo.
Don't look now but science requires a liberal dose of faith. Look at the global warming theory. Why is there NO scientist that can conclusively prove the existence of it? Why is the strongest argument for it "that most scientists agree"? Hasn't science claimed that the difference between itself and faith is that their theories can be empirically proven? Don't you think that a discipline like science should be able to prove its own global warming theory by its own standards?
