and supporting freedom fighters aka Taliban in Afghanistan also had no rational reasoning other than to make it hard on the Soviets. Facilitating the collapse of the USSR was the greatest gift to mankind of the second half of the 20th Century.

If Iraq had any military USA gave it the weapons. Iran is another country that USA had no reason to influence. In any case influencing Iran and or Iraq did not change anything.

I can argue what we call terrorism today was fueled by America during the Afghan war and this terrorism is a bigger threat to America than Soviet Union ever was.
