I bet most of you don't want you sons and daughter to be gay. No, you don't.
Two things - Big, you are too young to remember, and your study of history has been too limited in scope to incorporate it, but this is the same arguement that was used to protest the marriages between races. "Oh, I've got Negro friends, but I wouldn't want my daughter to marry one." and "Mixed marriages aren't fair to the children."
As for me, there is a young lady who was on my wrestling team. Her mother and step-father told her that when she turned 18 she would have to get out of the house. She turned 18 just before Christmas, half-way through her senior year in high school. She moved into our home. No big deal. I have had lots of kids use my house as temporary sanctuary - 3 days to 3 months - when things got tough at home. She told my wife and I that she was lesbian before she told her mother. She also calls me Dad, and my wife Mom.
She just finished her Junior year in college (3 As and a B last semester!), has a job that will turn full-time as soon as she graduates (the organization she works for thinks the sun rises because she wants it to), a car (paid for herself), and a really nice apartment. She also has a "significant other" currently on deployment to Afganistan.
The two girls plan to be married when the SO returns from her current deployment. My
"daughter" has asked me to give her away at her wedding - rather than her biological father or the absolute A-hole that is her step-father. I am honored.
Do I wish she wasn't gay? No. You are asking me to wish she wasn't the person she is. That is the same as when people ask me if I am sorry that I spent time in Viet Nam. Those are the experiences that shaped me. The only thing I am sorry for is that she is going to have to face bigots like you that will make her life less pleasant. Even with that, I have faith that she will transcend your stupidity, because I know she is a truly wonderful, loving, worthwhile, and valuable person. Sexual orientation doesn't change that.

I don't care who she is she has the wrong idea about marriage and you shouldn't be supporting it.

You're a moron. I usually try to attack the position and not the person, but I don't think that there is a way for me to do that on this one. Your bigotry and hatred are just sad. The fact that you keep railing on like a blathering idiot in this thread just show how sad you are. M. Rich has shared a wonderful story with us, and good for him and her. You have the audacity to judge him? Seriously, Big. Take your hatred elsewhere. It's stinking up the place.

Anyone who has followed of my posts knows how I feel about this subject - I support gay rights and have no tolerance for bigotry against gays. That said, I think I see where Big is coming from, and I will take the liberty of trying to clarify his position.

There are people who think that being gay is a choice - I think they are dead wrong and it's no more of a choice than being heterosexual. But among those who believe homosexuality is genetic, some like Big believe that it is a genetic defect - a deviation from the norm, a birth defect or disease. This is not a question of science, ethics, or religion. It's a question of what constitutes an genetic abnormality (like albinism) and what constitutes a genetic disease (like hemophilia). A disease is a condition that prevents normal functioning and gets worse if not treated. Big will argue that homosexuality is a disease because it prevents normal functioning. It does to some extent, but it is not progressive, does not threaten health, and requires no treatment. It is not a disease, mental or otherwise. Because homosexual behavior is appalling to Big, he can't accept it as an alternative, healthy condition. He ignores the fact that homosexuals don't have a choice, and therefore don't deserve to be denied any rights based upon their sexual orientation.

Big, I'm sorry if I have misrepresented your position, but that's the message I'm getting. I don't think you're a bigot, but I think your thinking on this subject is flawed.

Great story...really touching.
BTW, the whole business about mixed marriage is still very prevalent.
Surprising the people who still have some discrimination deep inside that come out when the surface is scratched.

Indeed. I dated a black man and it shocked me how many looks we would get when going out.

My position is this: some people can't cope well in the society with regard to relationships and they look for an easy way out. They see how easy it is to get the same sex partner and they go for it. I don't think it is a genetic defect in the sense that they have to love the same sex partner but in the sense that they can't deal with heterosexual intricacies in a social environment for one way or another.

Its a mental defect that is caused either by weakness or by trauma like abuse and stuff, for example a woman turns lesbian after her father or boyfriend abused her.

Look, we don't condone stealing just because a person turned to stealing due to trauma in his life so why homosexuality?

In which Big speculates about other people's lives, including those he doesn't know, and finds fault.

My position is this - you have no idea what you are talking about. Homosexuality is not a deviance or a response to life events. People are who they are and love who they love. Your "position" shows just how addled and small minded you are.
