I do agree that they would love to be martyrs, so we need to try them and find out the real story and if they are criminals, then sentence them to a life sentence of scrubbing floors or doing laundry or something totally mundane with no chance of parole.

We're not saying they should be let go, but shouldn't they have a right to a trial? Present the evidence and do what needs to be done, but don't lock up people for years without a trial.

The position the government takes on this (and it has merit) is that they cannot be effectively tried without revealing secret information. It is the usual "Catch 22" of counterintelligence - the trial will have to reveal information on how we caught them. That gives the enemy information on our capabilities.
The trials don't matter in my opinion. Whose court will try them? One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Many of them blew up innocent people before but were called freedom fighters by Reagan.
I'm sorry, but I do not want to pay for that. Scrubbing floors and mopping for plotting to kill Americans? U.S. interests?
Not on my watch.

But if you execute them, they'll be considered martyrs. That's what they aspire to. It's more of a punishment to let them scrub floors for 50 years if they are in fact guilty. Who knows if it will be a fair trial, but we have to try.

I hear you. I didn't say anything about executing them......
On the other hand, I don't have any faith that we'd have the guts to force people to scrub floors. A court would stop it at this rate.
