Looks like I've gotten myself in a communism vs.capitalism argument. There are many others out there better equipped to carry the capitalism banner than I, but if all the basic necessities are provided by the government, where's the incentive to work? What about those enginering students on that other thread who chose the wrong major because of cheap foreign competitiion? Are financial incentives to work harder a good thing or a bad thing? You can't have it both ways.

This is a different question Spider. All I am saying is that American people don't have time for serious criticism or revolt. People in Soviet Union did.

They had a lot of free time to think and get mad.

Soviet people had money to spend on many things. Things for the house, clothes, vacations, and possibly a car and a garage or sometimes to build a summer house for the very ambitious ones. This is another discussion of course.

And thinking is a bad thing? Are you really saying that if people are kept busy they will behave like ignorant automatons? When things are good, people will realize that. When things are bad, no amount of distraction will hide that fact.

Again, I know next to nothing about Russian history, but I'm speaking from what I hope is my common sense.

The difference is that Soviets could afford to walk out of their jobs if they wanted to. Most Americans can't.

If Soviet leaders knew criticism would never lead to revolt, they would allow criticism all along.

American people can't afford revolts. Soviet people could.....and did in 1990.

Man, a few thousand families foreclose on their mortgage and the country nearly panics. Can you imagine if people stopped work all across America for a month?

There would be no more America.

Here you are, Big. You could move to Vermont and join the secession movement there--revolt in other words.

    Bonnie,

He went into a coma during the time of "change". He can thank Gorbachev and Reagan for empty shelves.

Well done through out this thread Spider, agreed on pretty much all counts.

Big, you really, really need to try and address some of the flaws that Spider has brought out in your stupid arguments, instead of just moving on with another rant, because as of right now Spider is taking you out behind the woodshed.

You're glorifying a society as being "great" because people couldn't criticize their government, and they were too busy to think for themselves.
