Default Americans are getting screwed by capitalism

We have 300,000 American college students graduating with Engineering degrees of various kind but only 120,000 jobs every year are created that suit their majors and status. The rest of the jobs are provided for foreign workers with special visas who make less money than Americans.

CNN reports!

A small voice from the crowd shouts "down with capitalism".

Crowd squeezes small voice, falls to ground, gets trampled.

Did these students investigate the employment opportunities before they chose their majors? You can study what you like and take your chances or study what's in demand and improve the odds for financial success.

I heard picking fruits in California are in demand.

You all missed the point. The demand for engineers is there. Many of the jobs though are guaranteed to foreigners because they accept lower pay.

I didn't miss the point. If this situation was foreseeable, they should have considered it. It's not illegal for companies to seek out the cheapest labor.

Every day I sit in the cafeteria and eat lunch with fellow engineers. The table of engineers from India gets bigger every day. Temporary maybe, but our company is starting to send work over to India because they can hire 3 engineers for the price of 1 in the USA. As Salaries stay stagnant we watch our job security heading over seas. Manufacuring is moving to Mexico where they work for pennies but they get 3 meals a day.

I guess my point is that I made a choice many years ago and did not forsee this or expect it at that time. I can not blame a company to seek out the cheapest way to get product to the market but it is a bitter pill to swallow as an employee for 20+ years. I guess profit is the name of the game no matter the consequences.

If I did not have a wife and 3 kids in school I'd move to Dubai and challenge myself with 140 deg heat in the desert. I'd have to live there because non residents can not buy liqour.

It's up to legislators to make the call. Allow cheap foreign labor to maximize profits or place controls to guarantee domestic jobs. We can't have it both ways. My background in economics is non-existant, but this is how I see it. I don't know which is the right choice.

The long term effect will be devastating.

First, people in America with great engineering talents will not realize those talents because they will choose other majors for stability.

This will decrease American competitivenes in inventions with regard to the rest of the World.

Are the foreign engineers really less creative than American ones, even though they will work for less? If not, won't the American companies still own the new technologies that they develop? I think the question boils down simply to profits vs. employment.
