I was looking at some pictures of the area of Leningrad where I lived and the descriptions state very poor, ugly and isolated.

When I lived there it seemed to me very spacious, modern compared to private houses of NYC, and only 1/2 hour by train to the center of the city.

looks like Starret City Brooklyn. 1/2 to the downtown. Same style highrise apartments. Actually, it doesn't look so bad.

The old architecture is pretty cool and would be fun to see up close. The newer stuff is pretty bleak. Have you ever had any interest in going back to stay?

The first pictures are from a group interested in tourism. Obviously they're not going to show something too bad.

I've been to Prague and to the former East Berlin. Alot of the housing appeared gray and non-descript by U.S. standards. But appearances can be deceiving and that does mean it was bad. I've yet to see a major European (former communist or not) that didn't have a lot of beauty. Someone I work with has visited St. Petersburg in recent years and he has more than once raved about it.
