OPEC controls a portion of the world's oil supply, they will produce the amount that will make them the most money, the same as every other oil producer in the world.

And what source is going to produce the electricity to charge the car? (This is a serious question)

Those on Wall Street hedging the oil price are the ones killing the price. Pure speculation in the futures market. The more prople that opt in, the higher the demand and in the end it's the oil companies taking poseession at the market price. Don't get me wrong,. the oil companies are right in there driving up prices.

Well, if we need to, we can go geothermal, which we know that Iceland has done. Or, gasified coal, or biomass. There are a host of ways, if we want to do it.

It's important to keep in mind that the batteries that were being used at the end of the EV1's days were getting over 100 miles per charge. Because of their longevity, people were charging them at night, which is not even remotely peak energy use time.

The problem with anything electric charged is that people are going to use what's available, which where I live would be generated by coal. Ideally, ideas such as what you suggest could happen but who is going to be the driving political force behind them? Both parties currently are doing next to nothing.

I'm not sure Icelandic geothermal is realistic as they have a unique situation there. The whole island is geothermal and there isn't exactly a waiting list trying to move there either. I don't live in a very large urban neighborhood but it exceeds the entire population of Iceland.
