Default Obama slips up

Obama has been pretty careful during this election but looks like he slipped up a little here.

Pretty good job at claiming he said something that he didn't.

Fair and balanced.

It's very telling that this is all the RNC can come up with.

I doubt this doesn't even attract or interest any voter other than the ones who can't stand his guts. This is just grist for the mill for the party whose message is being soundly rejected all over this country.

I would imagine that this was a "family story" - some member of his family, at the end of WWII, was part of the liberation of one of the camps. (Although I would kind of think he would know he didn't have an uncle - that seems weird.) I suspect it will turn out that it was a cousin, great uncle, etc. There were camps liberated by U.S. Forces.
While I am no Obama fan, it is a shame that candidates cannot speak "off the cuff" in public without someone parsing every word. This seems like a more casual comment than Sen. Clinton claiming that she, personally, ducked sniper fire in Bosnia.

What he said, according to the Fox News article:
"I had a uncle who was one of the, who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps and the story in our family is that when he came home, he just went up into the attic and he didn’t leave the house for six months, right. Now obviously something had really affected him deeply but at that time there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain"

The article claims that there are two problems with this statement:
1)"Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet Army"
2)"and Obama’s American mother was an only child."

But in the Obama quote he never claims that his uncle liberated Auschwitz or that the uncle in question was his mother's brother.

The article also finishes with a quote from an outraged RNC spokesperson (who's job it is to get outraged and try to make a mountain out of a mole-hill) but doesn't have a counter from anyone at the DNC. Doesn't seem fair or balanced to me.

If that is truly what he said...I read that as his uncle was part of an American force which liberated the concentration camp.

I'm sure he will issue a clarifying statement and that will be the end of it. This is nothing compared to the sniper fire incident because that is on video!

I read it as his uncle was one of the first Americans to go into Auschwitz and that he liberated concentration camps. I don't think it implies that his uncle liberated Auschwitz and I definitley don't think it makes him a liar as CTC does.

And I agree that no where near the same as the sniper fire thing. I think it's people grasping at straws trying to come up with some dirt on Obama.

As a person who grew up in Iowa and then moved to Illinois, a state who's last governor sits in jail right now, I'm thinking that if that if that's the worst dirt they can find on our senator, we should be thrilled!
