Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton released a statement later Tuesday clarifying the remarks, saying the Illinois senator meant to refer to the Buchenwald camp, which American soldiers did liberate. Obama was also apparently referring to his great uncle.

Wow. Everyone had their knickers in a knot over the fact that he said the wrong camp that no one reported the point of the story. I heard a longer clip of it this morning. The point was that Obama's great uncle returned from his experience of liberating the prisoners and went straight up to the attic, didn't leave the house for six months and should have definately had some psychiatric counselling. What he was trying to say about the mental health of returning servicemen was totally lost.

Obama will have to put up with the same over-reaction to his words just like everyone else has had to put up with. Just like everyone saying that Bush planned the war for oil, just like everyone said Huckabee was a literal interpreter of the Bible, just like everyone said that Clinton didn't really endure sniper fire.

Wait a minute! The only ones who have been caught in lies are the democrats! The republicans are the ones who have told the truth, but they have endured more media controversy than the democrats, who actually LIED!!

Obama wasn't cault in any lie, read his quote in the article, what he actually said, not what Fox News says he said.

Obama admits he spoke incorrectly. I personally believe that he used the "term" uncle correctly. I know it was it great uncle, but I also do not use the term "great" wen referring to my great uncles and aunts.

That being said I also believe he used Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald for political reasons. I believe he used Auschwitz because that is more well known to the general public. I could be wrong and this is just my opinion.

On a side note I have been to Buchenwald and the Germans have done a great job in keeping it mostly intact and teaching what really happened there so it does not get repeated. My great uncle also helped liberate Buchenwald.

I don't doubt that he said Aushwitz because it's a more recognizable name, but he never said that his [great] uncle liberated Aushwitz. He said his uncle liberated concentration camps which, as far as I've seen, is correct.

Buchenwald and other camps Americans "liberated" were semantics. The Germans abandoned those camps days before "liberation" and most of the people there were leftovers from Auschwitz that marched to Germany by force. Soviets really liberated Auschwitz in Poland by fighting the German military all the way.
