Default Rev. Wright USMC

I just heard that Rev. Wright gave up his student defferment as served two tours of duty one as a US Marine and one as a Navy Corpsman

I don't know why this changes my opinion of him, but it does. I have so much respect for people who have served, especially Marines. He sacrificed alot for this country and maybe has become bitter becasue of racial issues he still precieves

http://www.drudge.com/news/106270/rev-wright-marine
In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F. Kennedy's challenge to, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," gave up his student deferment, left college in Virginia and voluntarily joined the Marines.

In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of service in the Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman. (They provide medical assistance to the Marines as well as to Navy personnel.)
What is even more remarkable is that this man entered the Marines and Navy not many years after the two branches began to become integrated.

While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/sailor, received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective father. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through family connections.

Bill Moyers (who, as an assistant to LBJ was present when this happened), showed a picture of President Johnson in a hospital bed--something to do with his spleen. Manning the IV unit (or something like it) was none other than Corpsman Jeremiah Wright.

Lee Harvey Oswald was also a Marine, so what?

Does that mean we are to ignore what he says today? Or not question the judgement of a man who wants to be the President of the United States that continued to attend and listen to the lectures/sermons of this man who says that the United States government invented AIDS to kill black men?

I question the judgement of a man who seeks the endorsement of a pastor who villifies all Catholics and another pastor who says that America was founded to get rid of the false religion practiced by Muslims. These are two very angry men.

It does not excuse or make it right, and it does not change that Obama was too close to someone who has nutty / racist views. It just tempers it somewhat. And it gives a fuller picture of Rev. Wright, maybe gives the possibility that there is a side that still loves his country that is being lost in the hype.

Timothy McViegh was in the Army as well, but Wright is not being charged with murder

You make a good point.... but really Wright is not an issue here. And niether is Hagee. They are both nutcases if you ask me. I hold them both in equal contempt.

What IS at issue, is the judgement of the two men who want to be our President and who they choose to be associated with.

Tight -- I said the same thing last week to an old friend. I suspect I will still vote (as I have every time since 1988), however, the 3 we have in front of us do not inspire me in the least. None of them. I feel as though I will be voting for the one that will do my family the least damage. I guess that makes me selfish in so many people's eyes. (Some of my co-workers told me that; what about the universal good?)
