The recounts/counting of the votes is what was stopped.

Then, they attempted to recount them, and that was stopped.

What happened was that ALL the votes were counted. During a recount, some counties wanted to apply different counting standards with regards to chads and voter intent than they used in the original count. The US Supreme Court said that a recount should not go on if it would be held to different standards than the original count.
In the end, the will of the people of Florida was done. We understand that you don't think the people of Florida should have been allowed to choose who they wanted for president, but the Supreme Court over-ruled you. | | |

In the end, the will of the people of Florida was done. We understand that you don't think the people of Florida should have been allowed to choose who they wanted for president, but the Supreme Court over-ruled you. | One important point was left out of this: "The US Supreme Court said that a recount should not go on if it would be held to different standards than the original count."
They made this ruling based on the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. For one, it is the first case where the plaintiff was not the one who claimed being denied the right to vote, but more importantly, They then ruled to throw out the undervotes and not count them.
It is for the bold above why no lawyer has yet to say that this was a valid and consisten ruling. How can you rule that people are beuing denied equal protection of the law, yet willfully not count thousands of votes?!
