Of course not. I understood it only recently myself. It is more important for Saudi Arabia to sell oil to Europeans than to America because Europeans would need $$$ to buy that oil and they can get those dollars only by selling their goods to America. In other words it is as though America was selling Saudi oil as its own in exchange for European goods from the point of view of the $$$ strength.

Of course Saudis will not do anything intentionally but if the world switches to other energies and nobody buys Saudi oil anymore, that takes away $.5 trillion in exports for dollars.

Unless America comes up with $.5 trillion more of exports that Europeans want, the $$$ will fall IF SAUDI ARABIA DOESN'T SELL OIL.

This is the whole plan of America backing Saudis in return for the oil for $$$ deal.

This might be also why America is hesitant to wean itself off of oil.

The market for oil will be there for decades to come. There will always be buyers including us. Currently we import 67% of the oil that we consume oil. Alternate energy will at best slowly lower this figuire giving all parties involved time to lead their countries economies in the direction that is best suited for them.

Don't be so sure. Once the technique is perfected oil can become irrelevant within a decade.

I hope this doesn't sound stupid...

    Don't they exchange currency electronically?

It's not like they have real paper dollar bills.

So, they don't really need to bring in any American dollars.

They can just exchange their Euros into dollars.

Of course. I didn't mean it literally. However, the more you exchange from your currency to another one the weaker your currency gets. As America exchanges $$$ into Euros to buy European goods, the $$$ fall. Then the $$$ regain strength when Europeans exchange Euros for $$$ to buy Saudi oil.

The demand for a certain currency determines how strong that currency will be.

However, Europeans need to sell their goods to America in order for Euros to stay strong due to Euros becoming weaker as they buy Saudi oil.
