I suppose I could look this up, but this is so much easier - What exactly happened? When they say "cyclone", do they mean typhoon or was it a tornado that broke a dam, because I see aerial photos and the entire area is flooded.
And while I 'm asking - how exactly should you punctuate a question that turns into a statement at the end?

OK, I'll answer my own question. Here's what Wikipedia says:
A tropical cyclone is a storm system fueled by the heat released when moist air rises and the water vapor in it condenses. The term describes the storm's origin in the tropics and its cyclonic nature, which means that its circulation is counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. Tropical cyclones are distinguished from other cyclonic windstorms such as nor'easters, European windstorms, and polar lows by the heat mechanism that fuels them, which makes them "warm core" storm systems.

Depending on their location and strength, there are various terms by which tropical cyclones are known, such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm and tropical depression.

Tropical cyclones can produce extremely strong winds, tornadoes, torrential rain, high waves, and storm surges. The heavy rains and storm surges can produce extensive flooding. Although their effects on human populations can be devastating, tropical cyclones also can have beneficial effects by relieving drought conditions. They carry heat away from the tropics, an important mechanism of the global atmospheric circulation that maintains equilibrium in the Earth's troposphere.

I was wondering the same thing. I thought that a cyclone was the Eastern Hemisphere's tornado, but I thought no tornado could cause that much damage. They were also talking on the news abotu storm surge, which I thought was a hurricane, or typhoon, thing, not a tornado thing.

BTW, I'll add Tennessee's Neyland Stadium to RYou's list. It's pretty big, too.

The flooded area could have been like New Orleans..... low lying, maybe with dikes or something in place, or just low lying. A 20-25 foot storm surge, without any warning, could easily drown that many unprepared people in a large city. It's happened in Bangledesh several times.
I am 49, bald, ugly, and don't own a single cool thing. Kids like me though.

    You pretty much nailed that.

The whole thing's a tragedy. The junta is afraid to let in foreigners, hence their crappy way of governing is exposed. So the solution of the junta is to let potentially tens of thousands of people die. Yeah, that's a logical, measured response.

I knew that but was too lazy to look up the name of the stadium.
