I just love to see people still try to use the claim to garner votes to say that democrats "love" big government, when the size, scope, and cost of government has done nothing but swell under republican control.

Let me remind you of the #1 responsibility of our government. It is to protect its citizen from harm both domestically and abroad. To do that it needs A) a military for the later and B) a police for for the former.

Until this last crew, the GOP has historically tried (usually in vain) to meet that obligation to protect its citizens and yet at the same time rein in some of the socialistic domestic spending policies of the Democrats.

Never forget it is the DEMOCRATS who love to tax and spend and have been that way since FDR. It has been, and hopefully someday will once again be, the GOP who maintains some 'semblance of fiscal responsibility.

Some would argue that the primary responsibility of government is to protect the rights of the citizens, which is slightly different.

You also assume that only the military and the police protect us from harm. The EPA, FDA, etc are also responcible for protecting the populace.

Couple of comments, a good idea imho even if it is only for the summer. For one thing if the economy rebounds, then it gives an additional time to rebound. As to it not helping everyone, tell that to the consumer who is having to pay higher prices at the grocery store due to the continued rate increases for transporting that food or product. Again, if only a minor benefit, better than no benefit.

Last point, for all of those who are opposed to rebates or tax decreases, like the gas tax freeze proposal, you can always either not accept the rebate or you can send in additional contributions to the IRS. As for me, the more of my money I can keep the better, and in situations like this, when a huge number of people are given some releif, great!

Isn't odd how that function of government (to protect its citizens) suddenly emerged when the Patriot Act, suspension of Habeus Corpus, and illegal wiretapping also emerged? Heck, maybe I'm just paranoid.

As for the "taxing and spending" part, here's some esential reading.

IMO the better way to controll gas is to start to raise the price on our corn and wheat to foriegn contries that supply us with oil. If they want to cut production and charge us $110 a barrel lets do it to them. Also lets stop sending billions of dollars in foriegn aid and invest it in our own economy.

Once again this is just my oppinion.

-I heard a report that oil suppliers are more than willing to up production, but they can't find anyone to buy it since oil refiners can't get loans to buy oil due to the credit crunch.
