I dare say most people just naturally want stuff, I don't know how much the government has to do with it.

The government makes favorable laws but the advertisement industry certainly has much influence. Otherwise, why constant TV commercials and such? If people want stuff there is no need to encourage it.

How about subrime mortgages? They advertised it to death. Home equity loans? People have survived for thousands of years without such stuff.

I'm on your side on this one, Big. You can see it happening day-by-day here in Russia.
    Government definitely affects consumer spending.

I don't remember where I read it but its something like: "Business and strategies to get people to buy things can replace a human desire to start wars". In other words, in capitalism, business and government wage a war on the public by getting them to consume. Hence the name: consumers.

    Big,

I have to ask, would you prefer to live in a Capitalist society or a Communist society?

Bottom line, you have the ability to say 'yes' or 'no' to ANY type of advertising. Influence or ideas from advertisers is not an excuse for not having a backbone. In essence, we all have the power to make our own decisions in a free society. What makes you think that the governmetn or any one entity can make decisions for 300,000,000 people better than those individuals themselves? Why are you so concerned about other people's business?

John Stuart Mill said the road for socialism will be clear if capitalism eventually leads to a major disaster. In other words, things like giving women equality to men and freeing slaves was once also unthinkable. Even Locke, the father of American politics, used to say people captured in a just war could rightfully be made slaves and not considered civil anymore.
