As an art major in college (although it was awhile ago I admit) I understand that art is about pushing the limits about defining what art is. I have seen performance art, including a piece where the audience was situated in the center of a gallery in a simulated ship and the artist stripped and painted the entire wall of the gallery with ketchup on his penis. I've long forgotten the point of it all.
I'm wondering if the parents of that student are aware of her project. I bet that's not what they were thinking her education would be when they wrote the checks.
Some red flags should be going off in the art department though or at least in administration. She has the right to look at this issue and to do it, but what is the responsibility of the university? I guess it was a success because it's making us all talk about it and think about it, but at what cost? This crosses the line for me, and you know I ranked myself as a liberal Liberal on our quiz.

I don't think there is enough lotion on earth to recover from that. Chafing!

Can we get back to the point of the article?

Without art, we would only see officially approved points of view. For example, films (and sometimes filmmakers), in the U.S. and Russia (to name two places) were censored throughout much of the 20th-century. I personally find many contemporary films to be offensive, with their gratuitous sex and violence. But I would not want to return to censorship.
The exhibit in controversy here will reflect on the artist. It will also be fodder for those who are always attacking higher education.
