I understand that Bush was simply pointing out to the Pope that most Americans believe in God and pray, just as he would have pointed out to a visiting foreign film director that most Americans go to the movies.
I see what you're saying and frankly I think its largely a matter of semantics as well, but there is a long history and tradition of prayer by both citizens and officials (Thanksgiving for instance) and was endorsed by our founding fathers.

I guess one can read as much or as little into his statement as their own mores dictate.

Aw, c'mon Big, you know that Bush was just sucking up to the pope, trying to tell him what he wanted to hear because he knew that the pope is gonna make him squirm when he has to justify the war.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, they want acknowledgement. At this point, the church has yet to acknowledge the problem and to condemn it. Hence, the reason why Sinead O'Connor ripped up the picture of the Pope on SNL.

Exactly! Bush is a politician. When speaking to the American Association fo Bass Fishermen, he might say something about how America loves fish. I don't like fish. Does that make me any less of an American? No.

Also, considering your opinion on Bush, do you really care what he thinks of you, and your lack of a faith life?

I don't really care about the Pope or Bush. They can talk about prayers and faith and abortion until they turn blue but the price of gas will still be high.

I didn't know the price of fuel was linked to abortion, faith, or prayers.

    OK, let me try this.

    Ahh-hemm (clearing throat)

I didn't know the Pope's purpose was to make Big's fuel bill lower.

    (I hope that's better.)
