I'm sure this sort of law would go nowhere in the U.S. with all the free market ideologues (many well-funded) whining about a "nanny-state". The Brigham Young professor remarks that it is nearly impossible to prove that the media results in eating disorders. I would say it's just as impossible to show that media results in people smoking. Yet we ban smoking advertisements--presumably because we acknowledge there is an effect. I firmly believe media influences people's habits--and often adversely. Advertising wouldn't be a billion dollar industry if it didn't work.
