The freedom fighters fight American in Iraq because its apart of a much wider conflict of America oppressing middle eastern people and makign war against them. America has put men on the ground to fight and they will be fought.

Wasn't America who said we will fight them over there rather than here, and now you are crying that you have to fight.

I dont agree that they hate us because of our presence in their country. IMO they hate us because of our way of life and how liberal we are when it comes to certain things like women's freedom and such.

I do agree with you that the insurgents dont want to keep us there. It is not a ploy Big they want us to leave so they can establish a government that would best serve there particular sect. They cant have that until we leave.

There is one thing that I would remind everyone of. If we wanted we could end this war in one month or less, that is a fact. It would be brutal it would be bloody (on their side) and we would conquer. But we are not there to conquer we are there (supposedly) to bring democracy and don't want to kill everyone in the process of achieving that goal.

Correction Ugly! They don't care about our way of life IN AMERICA. They hate when America brings its way of life to the Middle East. Russia is liberal towards women and Iran doesn't hate Russia for example.

They hated us before we got there.

That's the million dollar question. No, I don't think America is willing to give up its influence in the Middle East, but we could reduce our presence and/or deal with it in a way that doesn't convey to the people there that we're there to dictate things (as imperialists are wont to do).

They fear us NOT because WE bring liberal values into their country, they fear us because those values spread all on their own and from within their own community. Through the TV, through telephone, through internet, through word of mouth and on and on. It is especially how we treat women that terrifies them.

This is why they feel they must CHANGE us, and not merely isolate themselves.

To the extent this is true (not all people there hate America), it's for the reason Big mentioned. It's about hegemony and the imposition of the western world's standards on theirs. I believe people all over the world are basically the same. Inasmuch as people in the Middle East value their past (as we in America do), they are also open to change (see modernization efforts in Iran for example). They just want to do it their way, and not have it dictated to them. Also, remember Iraq was a modern industrial nation before we tried to bomb them into the middle ages. One sure way to generate hatred and opposition is to start bombing another country (as we have in Iraq since, oh, 1991 or so).
