Maybe Obama should institute a "dont ask, dont tell" policy in regards to torture
Like Billy Jacks' soul attack, I'm one Injun you wont forget.

Just to add my two cents.

It was mentioned that information gathered though torture is unreliable.

I believe this is true when getting someone to confess to doing something they didn't do. There are many examples of people confessing to crimes they didn't commit.

However, I think gathering intelligence about future terrorists plots and things like names and locations of fellow terrorists couldn't hurt even if only some of it were true.

The two scenarios are quite different IMO.

Publicly endorsing it, though, goes against international law, gives people from other countries more reason to hate us/not respect us, and puts our soldiers at increased risk of receiving similar treatment if captured. As someone earlier noted, it isn't like waterboarding was invented by the Bush admin, but it was first endorsed by them. Doing it from time to time, unbeknownst to the world, and giving it the governments seal of approval are two entirely different things, IMO.

I think I agree with you, even though I feel really uncomforable saying I would ever support torture. War is a horrible, horrible business and people will do what needs to be done. However, the idea widespread and institutionalized torture turns my stomach. If a person ever REALLY needs to be tortured (the hypothetical ticking time bomb scenario) people will do whatever it takes to get the info out of him regardless of government policy.

So with the hypothetical ticking time bomb scenario do you support the use of torture?

I'm not sure "support" is the right word, since I think torture is always immoral. However, if I was a soldier (or CIA operative or whatever) in that situation, I'd probably grit my teeth, do what needs to be done (including torture) and then have horrible nightmares about it afterwards.

I think most people's gut feelings about this boil down to an old police addage: Its better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Torture/enhanced interrogation is distasteful, and should be avoided when possible, but err on the side of protecting yourself or the people you're sworn to protect. Let the judging commence, the Bush administration prevented the carried by 6 scenario.

Chance, do you ever read anything other than right wing websites?

Whomever approved this torture, be they Dem or Repub should themselves be subjected to it.

This torture was done strictly to link OBL to Iraq. It was all about further justification to invade a sovereign country. It is absolute Bush/Cheney bullshit to say that it stopped an attack on LAX.

Thank God that those criminals are out of office and I hope the Justice Dept goes full bore to prosecute those that approved it.

Is Fox News really "right wing"? I'll agree that it slants to the right but it's still a mainstream new organization. If you consider Fox right wing then what organizations are left wing?
