You are probably right about many of those who are joining now, just as the same could be said for many of those who joined in the 80's and 90's when there was no threat of war. It's their best option monetarily and career wise.

However, my cousin took a 20k per year paycut to join the Army soon after 9/11 because he felt it was his duty as an American. He graduated cum laude from Miami University, so he's a pretty smart guy. His choice cost him over 100k in lost wages, so obviously money was not an issue for him. But then there has been at least one person from our family fight in every war since the civil war so he was simply following in the footsteps of the many men in our family who fought so that you have the right to spew your venom on sites like this.

Perhaps he hated his job. That is another reason.

Nope, he was a good enough employee that nearly 5 years later after he got home from his tour, his boss found him a position and he once again works for the same entity. He turned down a second tour because his wife wanted to settle down and start a family.

    Well, there are exceptions.

Must be really stupid, to fight in an illegal war based on principles.

So he turned down a second tour and let someone else go in his place while the battle was still on?

Heck, almost 4,000 haven't had an opportunity to do another tour because they have been killed. Wonder if any of them would have turned down another tour and been able to stay home and continue on with their lives?

If you would read, I told you how he signed up shortly after 9/11. That is well before we went into Iraq. He had signed his contract before forces were even on the ground in Afghanistan, so your statement has no merit.

    As for you Slayer,

I'm sure all of those that have ever died in battle would have preferred to have gone home after their tour and been able to have a normal life.

The other reason he chose not to return is that he didn't completely agree with the mission. This discussion wasn't about the politics of this war, so I left that out when talking with Big. However, as a man of principle (something many on this board are clearly lacking) he stood by his contract and went to Iraq as ordered and served with honor receiving a bronze star in the same operation where his first sergent was awarded a silver star. He felt that his greatest accomplishment as an officer was that not one single man under his command was killed during his 14mos in Iraq. Not only that, but not a single man was ever seriously wounded either. He believes in the war on terror, however he feels that being in Iraq is hurting our ability to go after terrorists effectively. What have you done aside from sit safely behind your computer screen to personally make sure fewer men die in our armed forces? He went over and personally made sure that 30 men all came home with little more than scratches. And yet you sit there and rip on him because he chose to step aside and let someone else do their part just as he had done his.

Why do Americans always try to seperate the soldiers from the politics.... the soldiers and the politics are 100 percent connected.

If a soldier is in an illegal war, he is a war criminal!

If a soldier kills anyone in an illegal war he is a murderer!

The solider should know following orders to commit crime's is not an excuse. This precedent was set when NAZI soldiers said they were just following orders.

    Its the same thing.

the soldiers and the politics ARE different!! They are explicity unrelated because the soldiers do not make the decisions to wage war!

But, that doesn't matter. You obviously think that the US should not protect its people or protect the freedoms of other people, so you'll say that ANYTHING the US does is illegal. Don't forget that 56 other countries sent troops in some number to Iraq and Afghanistan. 56 other countries!!

The biggest crock I have heard is the the US acted unilaterally. It couldn't have acted unilaterally, since 56 other countries helped!

But, the reason that you're even allowed to post freely on a message board like this is because the US had the nerve to stand up against those who wan to kill you and me.

You can denounce the US all you want, but the terrorists don't care if you like them or not. If you are not one of them, they want to kill you. You can praise them and denounce the US until you're blue in the face, but they still want to kill you.
