Let's be clear. Clarence Thomas has not asked a question from the bench during oral proceedings--that hour when attorneys get to make their case before the highest court. That by no means means he hasn't raised questions amongst his collegues or in his opinions. Nor does it mean he isn't a good justice or doesn't know what he's doing.

    John Marshall.

It had to do with the issue of Cherokee sovereignty in Georgia as it related to their Nation's Constitution v. wishes of the government to remove them I believe. President that said it was Jackson.

I wrote a paper for a history class last semester here at school dealing with the removal of the 5 Civilized Tribes, so thats how I knew.

matclone and JensenS have correctly answered my question. Scott Gallan, ANdrew Jackson was the President who challenged John Marshall in my question. I didn't give his name because I didn't want to give away the era.
Jacob Schlottke---Gone too soon, and the world is a little less bright because of it. RIP, brother.

I figure we have several people here well grounded in history. That sort of thing gives me confidence.
