Default One thing that makes people in communist countries more fun and friendly

Even though in communist countries people have fewer goods and sometimes of lower quality, they all seem to have or able to afford relatively similar things.

In other words it doesn't matter so much what kind of job you have or how lucky you were on the stock market or how rich your family was when you were born. The differences are not so great. What this does to people is releases them from envy and fanatical materialistc competition and valuation of people according to what they have.

As a result, people begin to value other things in each other over materialism. Things like sense of humor, hobbies, appearance and so on. People are more friendly to each other.

In capitalism one very big problem that many seem to overlook is ruthless drive to acquire more and to judge people according to what they have or can afford.

Let me tell you one thing. That is why prosperity can't really make people feel happy. Lets take a Japanese car for example. Japanese cars are nice BUT they are not as good or prestigious as a Mercedes or BMW. So, a person that has a Japanese car will not feel satisfied emotionally because he doesn't have a better car. Its the same way with apartments and houses. This makes people sacrifice their souls to constantly pursue better goods which makes people hostile to each other.

In the end, its not what they have that makes people happy but what they have with regard to the best possible in their environment that makes them satisfied or not.

So basically you are saying, if everyone around you is doing average you feel good about yourself because you are just like the rest of the average people in your surroundings?

Seems to me that is a good way to halt progress.

Sure, there are a lot of people in America and other wealthy countries that are arrogant because of their wealth, however, I think having a goal to earn X number of dollars/year or to save up to buy a nice house are excellent motivators for a society as well.

That is great Big. So if you are a bum and lazy don't work hard at all you can reap the same benefits as someone in the same field who works hard. That is a fair way to live. This is the soccer mom mentality that everyone should get a meddle even if they suck.

Let me tell you one other very interesting thing. Take women for example. Because in America the value of a man is judged by the size of his wallet very rarely will you ever see a beautiful woman dating or marrying a guy with a small wallet. Not so in communist societies. Many beautiful women preferred men with a good sense of humor, who liked to read, who had a strong character, who could fix things, and who looked good on the beach even if they earned an average salary.

That is not what I am saying people. In America engineers work as hard as stock brokers, and PHD professors work as hard as doctors or at least have a similar education. However, a stock company executive can make 1000 times or more of an engineer.

The same guy is getting the girl in Russia as in USA; the funny, charismatic, good looking guy. The only difference is that in Russia they are held back from completing the financial aspect.

What progress matters more than people worrying more about human qualities than material goods? where are you rushing towards? 40 years ago people were very happy with cars or TVs that today people would laugh at. What is all this technology for if it takes away from human qualities and people being friendly towards each other?

Why do you need all this progress?

Yes, but they picked their job. If the engineer wanted to do stocks, odds are he is smart enough to do so.

Slightly off topic, the engineer still has the safer job- it won't collapse and cause him to go skydiving without a parachute if the market takes a dive.

    Schlottke,

The difference is that a beautiful woman in communist Russia would not ask you on the date how much money you make and what kind of house you can afford.
