If by progress you mean the development of improved medical technology, safer vehicles, etc... then you should be able to answer that yourself.

(then after they've saved the world, they can go buy a couple of plasma tvs.. lol)

In some types of accidents, maybe. On the environment, definitely not.

side impact and steering wheel Air bags, traction control, anti-lock brakes, OnStar... all have saved lives as the result of someone's initial interest in making money.

Then why do we see models that look different every two years? Is that for safety also?

Cool. My main point is that "Progress" as you call it Schlottke tends to have effects on human minds and relationships and many of those effects I would call negative like seeing the value of a person mainly by where he economically stands in society.

It's kind of funny to see how this thread went from communism to women. It all goes back to women, I guess.

Anyhow, Big, I had high hopes for us after yesterday's freedom post. I thought we were winning you over, but I guess we haven't completed your conversion just yet. That's OK, though. I'm still proud of you for sticking up for freedom.

Back to the task at hand, no one in the free market/capitalism section is saying that materialism, prosperity, or anything else will make you happy. Capitalists think that an individual should find whatever makes him happy and he should do it. In a free market society, you can have as much or as little as you want and be as happy as you want!! Capitalism affords the maximum amount of freedo mto the maximum amount of people and lets the individual decide his own happiness.

It seems that you are the only one worried about materialism. No one else in this thread seems to be worried about it. We al lhave the ability to live however we want. In a communistic society, if I want more than what I have been allowed, I have no way to acheive it. If I want less, I am forced to take what they have given me.

Let's not forget, also, there's the whole incentive factor. Just read William Bradford's account of the first growing season of the pilgrims at the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They tried a communal system, living by the adage "from each according to ability to each according to need." They found that they had less food under that system than they had under a capitalistic free system.

But, you still upheld freedom yesterday.
