And so under the banner of the "War on Terror" who will stop interested parties from spying on people of any field and walks of life? Without warrants the abuse is virtually undetectable. It was only a matter of time before America became a fascist state!

No conversation will soon be safe ranging anywhere from business coversations to private matters!

WASHINGTON ? After more than a year of heated political wrangling, the Senate handed the White House a major victory Tuesday by voting to broaden the government?s spy powers after giving legal protection to phone companies that cooperated in President Bush?s warrantless eavesdropping program.

Of course, this deal was promoted and brokered mainly by Republican Senators.

Big, I am shocked!! You had a thought that sided with freedom! You and I agree! That's amazing.

I agree that the government shouldn't be allowed to freely wiretap private phone lines without warrants. FISA court judges sit 24-hours/day and are available to grant warrants at a moment's notice any time day or night.

This issue is about protecting freedom and protecting the American system of government. We already have a just system in place to deal with these matters -- the FISA court. The President and those who support warrantless wiretapping are clearly in the wrong. With FISA judges sitting 24 hours and instant electronic communication, there is no reason to wiretap without a warrant.

I still can't believe that you are advocating that government should protect freedom, after you have railed in the past about how freedom is bad. You even showed concern for "business conversations" and "private matters"! I guess I wasn't that far off when I said that freedom was the human default position. Even though you disagreed, you are advocating freedom!

    Good post.

Well I am glad the free marketer and the Holy man are in agreement with me on this one. I guess sometimes a common ground can be found.

Big, all this bill is doing, with the support of democrats that could have killed it, is to afford the phone companies immunity from lawsuits. This is common practice for the government when a private business is forced to cooperate with the government.

C'mon, the phones companies can't not cooperate and stay in business.
