Default Ha Ha Ha, when will Bush halve spending on his Iraq pet project?

WASHINGTON — President Bush will veto spending bills this year unless they halve the amount of money earmarked for lawmakers’ pet projects, and he will order agencies to ignore future earmarks unless they are explicitly listed in the text of legislation, the White House said Monday.

Mr. Bush’s press secretary, Dana Perino, said these actions, to be announced in the State of the Union address on Monday night, were “unprecedented steps” to prevent wasteful earmarks.

This year’s earmarks set aside money for bridges, highways and other public works; museums, universities and research on topics like grape genetics; bicycle trails and parks; control of agricultural pests like the emerald ash borer beetle; and aid to military contractors producing missiles, munitions, “merino wool boot socks” and many other items used by the armed forces.

Bush would likely make this distinction: defense of the nation is necessary and beneficial to all, whereas the earmarks (sometimes referred to as pork) benefit only certain segments of the country.

The distinction he won't make, however, is that the cost of these earmarks are dwarfed by the amount of money used to keep the Iraq occupation in place.

One might also argue that all these earmarks are of actually benefit to the public whereas waging war overseas is of dubious benefit and is done at a great cost.

Do you think the word "pork" is used to convince Jewish voters of its negativity?

Say matclone, if the war was started to defend America and no WMD were found, why did America allow Shiites to kill Saddam and overthrow his government? If the answer is because his government was unjust and he was a dictator, then why did America support him before and did not try to overthrow him before 9/11?

Seems like a clear pet project to me.

No. Jewish voters do not make up a significant portion of the voting populace although they can occasionally be quite influential as were the (tongue in cheek) Jews for Buchanan.

Well, of course I hope everyone can see it was a joke but come on matclone you know although Jewish voters make up a small number, they are quite influential with their wealth and positions in America. Saying someone is promoting pork spending can be a wonderful deterrent for Jewish people not to support that candidate with money and otherwise.

I more or less agree, Big. But you should try to understand the arguments of those you disagree with, before disagreeing with them. Otherwise, you might be thought of as less than informed.

I do disagree with an implicit point you made--about overthrowing dictators. Alot of people in this country think such action are right and proper but they actually contravene international law we've agreed to--which is why Bush had to tell the public stories about Iraq being a threat to us (a legitimate cause for war) rather than talking about taking out a dictator (not a legitimate cause. Think about why that is).

I agree with you matclone. Interestingly, even though its a violation of international law, many Americans feel overthrowing Saddam government is still a legitimate reason for Iraq invasion.

Also, this is exactly my point as far as making up crap about justifying the war when in fact America screwed up and will not even admit it. Admission would be restoring Saddam government back to power, and paying reparations for harm done due to invasion (probably would be a lot cheaper too than what is going on now). This goes for both Republicans and Democrats.

The underlying principle being: might is right.

It'd be kind of hard to have a Saddam gov't without Saddam. Face it, we destroyed a lot of things other than buildings and people. We've destroyed a lot of the institutions that held their country together.

Just more proof it was a Bush pet project. A criminal cannot be killed without proof of wrongdoing. American military bombed everything related to government there to hell to destroy Saddam regime, not to find WMDs.
