Bobby Fischer's life, proof America had no real freedom
May he rest in peace. He died at 64.
From what I heard he went to defend his World title in chess in Eastern Europe against the wishes of American politicians and he was named a traitor of America. Wow, if this is so, I can't believe zealous capitalists would go so far to defend their "freedom'.

I remember he went to Yugoslavia when the Serbs were over running the other Yugoslav Republics to a staged "world Championship" rematch against Spassky.
This was many years after he had dropped out of mainstream Chess competition. US officials had an issue with his giving legitimacy to a brutal regime.

Come on! The guy just wanted to play the best and the best on that day were in Yugoslavia.
Say all you want but label him a criminal and take away his citizenship? Which regime was really more brutal with regard to this incident?

In ancient times The Greeks used to stop wars to hold sporting events. Today's societies are a decayed bunch to think politics should influence sports and punish sports men for their love and respect for one another.

The event I recall was not a legitimate World championship. It was staged by the regime to give themselves legitimacy. none of the top players of the time were there. If Fisher wanted to play the best he would have stayed in competitive Chess and tried to win the "real" world championship. Fisher appear to have serious mental problems for many years
Even if all of the above is untrue, it seems pretty clear that the Serbian Genocide is more butal than anything the US government ever did to Fisher.
Re: Bobby Fischer's life, proof America had no real freedom
If it were not a legitimate championship, then how did Fischer give Serbian government legitimacy? This makes no sense. The guy just wanted to play his rival. I really don't get what you are saying here.

Yugoslavia was an international pariah becuase it was murdering other ethnic groups. It wanted some positive press so it staged this Chess match between Fisher and Spassky and called it a World Championship.
The US had imposed sanctions aginast Yugoslavia at that time and it was illegal to violate them like Fisher did.
Surely you think sanctions are better than war.

Bunch of crap. Fischer was there to play chess. What did it have to do with US-Yugoslavia conflict?
