"We will seek out the Americans and if we capture them we will slaughter them," said a 25-year-old pirate based in the Somali port of Harardhere who gave only his first name, Ismail.

"We will target their ships because we know their flags. Last night, an American-flagged ship escaped us by a whisker. We have showered them with rocket-propelled grenades," boasted Ismail, who did not take part in the attack on the Liberty Sun.

So... Here are a couple ideas for how to combat this:

#1) All American flagged/owned vessels now should carry 10+ trained, armed military personnel. Over the ship's speaker system, announce that the ship should come no closer, that the crew is protected by the US Military, and that they will open fire. If they continue, you blow their ship out of the water.

    Then, to further the cause,

#2) Send out ships that are flagged US, packed with armed military, allow the pirates on board so they can "capture" the ship. Take all of these pirates hostage and use them to lure more pirates to the scene (threaten to kill them if they won't call for back up- which they 'need for support against the US military that is coming to the scene'). When the new pirates arrive, they get the surprise that the ship is not actually captured, but instead their friends are.. and now they are.

Worst thing to happen now is if the Somali pirates get onto another ship and start killing our unarmed people- its a simple fix.. Arm the crew, kill the pirates.
I like both ideas but I "really" like the second one...... "surprise you are now going to die!"
I am 49, bald, ugly, and don't own a single cool thing. Kids like me though.

Definitely. They keep them at bay with powerful hoses, assault rifles would end things before they ever had a chance to get ugly.

I think murderous is probably good given that thats probably all they understand.

My wonder about #2 is whether or not you would find pirates who were willing to call their home boys into an ambush.

Aren't there problems with lots of ports not allowing ships with armed crew to dock?

    Call in Blackwater.

They will soon be looking for work once we pull out of Iraq.

There is a graphic depicting the killing of the 3 pirates floating around. I haven't found it just yet. It's animation of the enclosed lifeboat the pirates held the captain captive in. When I heard about the snipers I thought they picked of the pirates there standing in an open boat.

    Not so.

The snipers picked off the pirates shooting through a little window in the front of the boat. It's hard to imagine given that description, but this is a little 12 x 9 inch window....and three bullet holes. It's pretty scary those Seals were that talented shooting into a rocking boat from a rocking boat.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.
