Default Stock market just erased all gains from last year

This means unless it reverses direction dramatically, your 401Ks are flat for the past year.

Only if you bought all of your positions on Jan 1, 2007. A 401k has the benefit of dollar cost averaging.

....and only if you are 100% invested in stock. Diversification is a key rule for sound investment strategy.

Gold hit a record high http://www.cbc.ca/cp/business/080108/b010869A.html and silver projected to double to $30.00 plus an ounce. http://www.kitco.com/ind/Daughty/jan042008.html It may be time to get out of paper and into physical.

I just ran a statment on my 401k for 01/01/2007 to 01/08/2008. Not including my deposits and my matching money, it was up a little over 10% for that time period. But I only have 10% of the funds invested in the S&P500 fund right now, 40% in bonds and 30% in an emerging markets fund (which is down only slightly and has done well in the past).

I've been in for quite some time...there's a long way to go. Become familiar with the kitco.com forum. The big % gains are yet to be achieved. Buy on the dips. GopherPHan...had you gone into gold/silver at the end of the year you would be showing a +5.7% gain on the gold and +8.3% gain on the silver AS OF 10:00 am THIS MORNING. (01-11-08)

Pulled out entirely in October. Just watching for the right time to jump back in to the Asian market. Return - 24% in 2007. The Asian market dives twice as much as the US market, but the upside is double too.

Not so...The gold / silver markets have been very volatile the past few years. The large per-cent increases are forecast for the near future. Had you turned your energy stocks into precious metals just two weeks ago, you would have realized a +9.36% gain in GOLD and an +11.8% increase in SILVER. [%'ages as of 0600 hrs. 01-14-08.] DYODD
